Find the law firm behind the referral
Personal injury, disability, and workers compensation firms across Canada that order Independent Medical Examinations, and the public registers that verify counsel standing.
The problem
The referral names counsel you cannot verify
A med-legal referral arrives with a firm name, a lawyer, and a file number. You need to know the lawyer is in good standing, which side they act for, and where to send the report. That check should take a minute, not a morning.
- The firm name on the referral does not match any directory entry.
- You cannot tell if counsel acts for the plaintiff or the defence.
- The report goes to a general inbox instead of the lawyer on the file.
What changes
What IMECore does about it
Verify standing in the public register
Each province runs a lawyer directory in the public interest. Start there before you book, and record the check on the case.
Read the file for the side and the regime
Plaintiff or defence, ICBC Part 7 or SABS, WCAT or LAT. The regime sets the report headings, so it belongs on the case before records arrive.
Keep counsel on the case, not in email
IMECore holds the instructing lawyer, the firm, and the delivery address against the case. The report and the invoice reach the person who ordered them.

FAQ
Questions people ask
Which directory verifies a lawyer's standing?
The law society of the lawyer's province. Use the LSBC lawyer directory for BC, the LSO directory for Ontario, the Law Society of Alberta directory for Alberta, and the Barreau du Québec Bottin for Quebec. Each entry shows practising status, which is the fact that matters before you book.
Does IMECore list every law firm?
Not yet. This directory starts as province guides that point at the public registers, and it grows into firm listings as we verify them. If your firm orders med-legal assessments, contact us and we will add it after a standing check.
How do you handle conflicts with counsel?
The examiner record carries known counsel relationships, and the case runs a conflict check before booking. A hit blocks the booking or needs an explicit override with a reason. Every override stays in the audit log.
What does counsel receive with the report?
The signed report, the referral questions with answers in order, and a timeline of the case. Delivery goes to the instructing lawyer through the client portal. The invoice follows the fee confirmed on the referral.

Independent Medical Examination
An independent physician examines the person, reviews the records, and answers the referral's questions in a signed report. Insurers, employers, and law firms order one when the treatment notes alone cannot settle diagnosis, causation, or work capacity.

Functional Capacity Evaluation
A clinician works through a standardized set of physical tasks — lifting, carrying, sitting, standing, reaching — and reports what the person can do against the demands of their job. In Ontario the same assessment is called a Functional Abilities Evaluation (FAE). Employers and insurers order it for return-to-work and disability decisions.

Medical File Review
A physician or psychologist answers the referral's questions from the records alone, with no examinee appointment. Insurers and counsel order one when the file is complete and the question is narrow, or when an examination cannot be booked in time. It cannot speak to current presentation the way an examination can.
